It can take years to decide to adopt, seconds to take the first step

Peter and Sharon’s story

Peter and Sharon adopted Millie, aged three, earlier this year.

Peter spoke about the adoption: “I am pleased to say that Millie is now part of our family. We feel very blessed and we will strive to give Millie the best possible start in life.

“Millie is a happy child. She enjoys playing with her toys and dancing to music. She is well behaved and likes a structured routine. After family events and visits to friends she can act up and become disruptive. After her birthday she threw a big tantrum and shouted at us but after comforting her and talking to the post adoption support team we uncovered that this was because she did not feel she deserved the presents and attention she received. This is heartbreaking for us and we hope that she will become more trusting and accept the love we shower over her.

“Being an adoptive parent is by no means easy but we wouldn’t change it for the world. Millie makes us smile every day.

“Having adopted previously six years ago, we have been very impressed with the level of service provided by Somerset County Council. The Social Workers and support workers have showed incredible commitment and professionalism. They have at all times put Millie’s needs first while supporting us during the process.”
